September 2003 Issue 1, Volume 1
Welcome to the first issue of Accrington CommUnity Newsletter (ACN). The newsletter is produced by Ethnic Youth Enterprise (EYE).
EYE is a voluntary organisation setup in January 2003. It is particularly focused on organising activities and programmes in particular for the youth of Accrington. Its aim is to empower the youth with self esteem, confidence, communication and inter-personal skills. And to combat social exclusion, delinquency, and social deprivation in a creative and positive long term manner.
The group is run by professional members from the local community. It is hoped that the group can be an inspiration and encouragement to youth to work hard in education and the rewards it can bring in good careers.
We aim to give an alternative to standing on street corners, taking drugs and being bored. We have several projects in the pipe line. We have football sessions on Friday. We will give an opportunity to youth who attend these sessions, who show commitment and dedication to take part in our seven-a-side football teams in the Hyndburn Sports Centre. This will be complimented with training and coaching sessions.
Also, we will organise camping trips away from the local community. To give youngster the confidence, independence and the re-assurance to be able to work as part of team. This will give individuals a sense of responsibilities and trust within supervised environment.
We aim to be the voice of the youth. And by using this newsletter and website give them an avenue to express themselves and for them to be heard. We will look at feedback from the youth and act on their views.
